Chapter

Thirty

Ásjá. The Realm of the Gods. Never, in my entire life, did I think that I would be standing in a forest that was on the outskirts of the Eleven Gods’ home.

But even now, standing before it, I couldn’t believe my eyes.

The forest resembled the one in Eiði, with large and old trees of various ages. It was almost identical. Fenrir’s ears perked up, his nose taking in all the scents and smells that came with this new place. He didn’t leave my side, instead remaining closer to me, wrapping his tail around my legs in an effort to protect me. From what, I couldn’t decide just yet.

I didn’t wait for Kol or heed his intake of breath as I stepped out of the forest and into the new realm we had just jumped into. There was a bridge that connected this forest to the city beyond, water running through channels that connected into a lake that I could see in the distance.

Stepping onto the cobblestone bridge, I stalked towards the main city, but a hand grabbed mine and pulled me away, back into the safety of the forest. Kol spun me around, forcing me to rest with my back to a tree.

He hovered over me. Images from back in Jarl’s longhouse sprang to mind, and I tried to stamp them down quickly.

“Are you insane?” Kol sounded more annoyed than angry. “You can’t just waltz into Allrland like you own the bloody place.”

“Allrland?”

His lips twisted. “Right, I forget. Humans don’t know about this city.”

I blinked at him, confused. “Is that the name of this city?”

He pushed himself off the tree, raking a hand through his hair as he sighed. “Allrland is the name of Ásjá’s capital. All the other realms have their own capitals just like Röskr does.”

“Huh,” I said. “I didn’t know that.”

“Yes, well.” He turned back to me. “Not many humans know about it.”

“So we’ve established that I can’t walk in there. Can you elaborate as to why?”

“Because you’re not a god,” he said simply. “We’ll have to walk together.”

I wrinkled my nose. “I don’t think so.”

He crossed his arms. “As you already know, humans can’t use magic.” He gestured to my arms. “And as such, no one who isn’t a god can jump through realms. To see a human in Allrland is rare, unheard of even.”

I raised my hands in exasperation. “Then what the hell was my changing appearance have to do with anything if a human being here is so unheard of?”

“Gods takes wives and husbands. They can be human, but they need to be seen with them,” Kol told me.

“So then let’s go.” I began to walk forward but halted. Did… did he just say wives and husbands?

He smirked. “Judging by the look on your face, you just realized what I had said.”

Pointing to him and then myself, my eyes bulged. “Did you just say wives and husbands? Does that mean—”

Kol held up his hands. “Don’t worry. You’re not married to me. You’re my fiancé.”

“Fiancé?” I squeaked.
